A few days later word a messenger from one of villages in the Kingswood alerted the Brotherhood that the King had sent a detachment led by Ser Arthur Dayne to apprehend them and force them to atone for their crimes. Strengthening their defenses, the outlaws began taking watch and readying their weapons for an attack to come at any moment. Still days passed, tensely as they waited for more news to arrive from the small folk. Yet nothing had come since word of Ser Arthur’s company had been brought to them. It was a suspicious thing, usually, at least one person for the villages came per day. However, not a single man, woman, or child had shown up since then. Alayna wondered if Arthur had something to do with it. She knew he was more than capable of finding a way to turn the small folk back to the King’s side at least long enough to apprehend the Brotherhood. Understanding the Modern Medieval Hero While the heroes themselves were crafted in time periods far apart, the foundation for Batman’s character can be traced back to Beowulf. This ‘character’ of The Hero is considered to be the ever-evolving foundation for many of the super-heroic characters prevalent in modern media. Batman and Beowulf in particular; as heroes they are strong, swift. As men they are sought after and considered the would be pinnacle of ‘attractive’ for their times. Being born of royalty or power does not corrupt them, rather further their adventures and combat in societies plagued by monstrosities or crime. From the most educated scholars to high school dropouts, the majority of us have the assumption that our futures will involve robots, flying cars, and breathtaking architecture. When contemplating the way things are progressing in the 21st century, how much of these technological advancements can we really count on? The movie Idiocracy, critiques aspects of our society †such as more intelligent people waiting to have children, the deterioration of the English language, technology making it unnecessary to learn certain skills, and our choices in entertainment,† by exaggerating what American society would be like in 500 years if we follow the same trends. Idiocracy, directed by Mike Judge, is an exaggeration of how American society would be in 2505. It is about an army employee named Joe Bauers, who was involved in a military project in which he was frozen in a state of suspended animation and forgotten about for 500 years. When he finally awakens he is in a dumbed down, dystopian society where he ends up being the smartest individual. In this new society, everyone depends on him to fix all of the domestic problems they are facing. Even though the movie came out in 2006, many of the problems expressed about the future are starting to happen right now. As explained in the movie, it all begins when unfit? households had an increase in childbirths while educated, capable? households were waiting to be financially stable or ready for kids. Eventually, this causes those who were known as intellectuals to become extinct. ? Though this is a dramatic and over exaggerated concept, this is somewhat a problem that is happening in todays society. One example of this concept in todays culture is a show like 16 and Pregnant, where teenage girls get pregnant and drop out of high school. Another example of this is The Jerry Springer Show, where one sees a man who has four babies from four different women. These examples demonstrate some negative implications in which our society could be going in the future if we do not change. In addition to these illustrations, it seems that todays working class is too preoccupied to reproduce. Overall this movie satirically presents the members of society as uneducated, dirty, sex fanatics. Another problems portrayed in the movie was the deterioration of the English language. As the narrator put it, Modern speech had degraded down to a mixture of slang, hillbilly, and grunts. In 2505, they no longer had schools, books or authors, which lead to English being extremely dumbed down and primitive. What is keeping us from reaching the same fate? This effect seems to have already started in that, most of our words and phrases are becoming acronyms. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary has started adding words such as selfie ? and twerking ? to its official list of words in the English language. Mrs. Bongard and fellow classmates, Under the circumstances, Ross Rebagliati should not have lost his medal. To start off, marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug. Many drugs can enhance the performance of an athlete. For example, Steroids increase ones muscle level, making them stronger, faster etc. These drugs are said to give the athlete an unfair advantage over the others. Any ruling based on the use of performance-enhancing drugs is justified, but since marijuana has little or no effect on an athletes performance, and it would not give him an advantage over other athletes, a ruling based on the use of marijuana isnt necessary. In addition to this, many doctors have stated that marijuana gives the athlete a disadvantage over others because it could make that athlete tired, or weak. Rebagliatis urine test showed trace amounts of marijuana. Doctors say that it is very possible that one could inhale this small amount, strictly from being in the same room as other people who were smoking it. Ross Rebagliati told the press that he had not smoked marijuana since last April, 9 months bef ore the Olympics, and the last time he come in contact with the drug, was at a party about a week before the Olympics, where others were smoking marijuana. This means that the Olympic Committee made its ruling without even knowing if Rebagliati ever smoked marijuana. The International Olympic Committee does not have any certain specifications for the amount of marijuana that one is allowed to have in his urine. According to their rules, marijuana is perfectly legal. The International Ski Federation, however, lists a threshold of concentration of 15 nanograms per millilitre. In my opinion, the IOC should not make rulings based on the rules of the International Ski Federation, because it is obvious that they do not know how to correctly implement those rules. One may think that since smoking marijuana is illegal, Ross Rebagliati doesnt deserve to win a medal anyway. Although this is a logical way of thinking, it is impossible for every single law, of each and every country that participates in the Olympics to be enforced by the International Olympic Committee. Perhaps each country should enforce its laws for its own national championships, but not for the Olympics. After the IOC announced Rebagliatis disqualification, The Canadian team filed an appeal. The appeal panel overturned the International Olympic Committees decision because the rules regarding the use of marijuana are fuzzy, and because they realized that the IOCs decision was unfit. Although Ross Rebagliatis medal was returned to him, this whole incident will still affect him greatly for the rest of his life. For example, many of his sponsors will have second thoughts over whether or not to rehire him. Also, his image in the eye of the public will be greatly affected.
