Strengthening their defenses, the outlaws began taking watch and readying their weapons for an attack to come at any moment. Still days passed, tensely as they waited for more news to arrive from the small folk. Yet nothing had come since word of Ser Arthur’s company had been brought to them. It was a suspicious thing, usually, at least one person for the villages came per day. However, not a single man, woman, or child had shown up since then. Alayna wondered if Arthur had something to do with it. She knew he was more than capable of finding a way to turn the small folk back to the King’s side at least long enough to apprehend the Brotherhood. This ‘character’ of The Hero is considered to be the ever-evolving foundation for many of the super-heroic characters prevalent in modern media. From the most educated scholars to high school dropouts, the majority of us have the assumption that our futures will involve robots, flying cars, and breathtaking architecture. When contemplating the way things are progressing in the 21st century, how much of these technological advancements can we really count on? The movie Idiocracy, critiques aspects of our society †such as more intelligent people waiting to have children, the deterioration of the English language, technology making it unnecessary to learn certain skills, and our choices in entertainment,† by exaggerating what American society would be like in 500 years if we follow the same trends. Idiocracy, directed by Mike Judge, is an exaggeration of how American society would be in 2505. It is about an army employee named Joe Bauers, who was involved in a military project in which he was frozen in a state of suspended animation and forgotten about for 500 years. When he finally awakens he is in a dumbed down, dystopian society where he ends up being the smartest individual. In this new society, everyone depends on him to fix all of the domestic problems they are facing. Even though the movie came out in 2006, many of the problems expressed about the future are starting to happen right now. As explained in the movie, it all begins when unfit? households had an increase in childbirths while educated, capable? households were waiting to be financially stable or ready for kids. Eventually, this causes those who were known as intellectuals to become extinct. ? Though this is a dramatic and over exaggerated concept, this is somewhat a problem that is happening in todays society. One example of this concept in todays culture is a show like 16 and Pregnant, where teenage girls get pregnant and drop out of high school. Another example of this is The Jerry Springer Show, where one sees a man who has four babies from four different women. These examples demonstrate some negative implications in which our society could be going in the future if we do not change. In addition to these illustrations, it seems that todays working class is too preoccupied to reproduce. Overall this movie satirically presents the members of society as uneducated, dirty, sex fanatics. Another problems portrayed in the movie was the deterioration of the English language. As the narrator put it, Modern speech had degraded down to a mixture of slang, hillbilly, and grunts. In 2505, they no longer had schools, books or authors, which lead to English being extremely dumbed down and primitive. What is keeping us from reaching the same fate? This effect seems to have already started in that, most of our words and phrases are becoming acronyms. Many drugs can enhance the performance of an athlete. For example, Steroids increase ones muscle level, making them stronger, faster etc. These drugs are said to give the athlete an unfair advantage over the others. Any ruling based on the use of performance-enhancing drugs is justified, but since marijuana has little or no effect on an athletes performance, and it would not give him an advantage over other athletes, a ruling based on the use of marijuana isnt necessary. In addition to this, many doctors have stated that marijuana gives the athlete a disadvantage over others because it could make that athlete tired, or weak. According to their rules, marijuana is perfectly legal. The International Ski Federation, however, lists a threshold of concentration of 15 nanograms per millilitre. In my opinion, the IOC should not make rulings based on the rules of the International Ski Federation, because it is obvious that they do not know how to correctly implement those rules. One may think that since smoking marijuana is illegal, Ross Rebagliati doesnt deserve to win a medal anyway. Although this is a logical way of thinking, it is impossible for every single law, of each and every country that participates in the Olympics to be enforced by the International Olympic Committee. They did not trust the common people and believed that only the well educated and rich should hold positions within the government. They believed in the creation o f a central bank and the creation and support of a standing army. They were convinced that the funding of the old Revolutionary War debts should become the debt of all states. Because they were merchants and bankers they believed that the future of America lay within manufacturing. The Federalists did not feel threatened by the continued British pressure in the northwestern parts and there for they were pro-British. They were strong supporters of the Jay Treaty of 1794, which would terminate the difficulties with Britain and its navy. Theories of Human Nature Essay In this paper I will contrast the five theories of human nature, and explain why I believe one to be more superior to the other four. To begin, the five theories of human nature are, rationality, divinity, man-machine, existentialism, and cultural. The first of the five theories is rationality, and simply states that one uses knowledge with the process of thought to draw a conclusion. If a dog’s bowl full of food in the morning, but later in the afternoon it has become empty. One could rationally draw the conclusion that the dog could have eaten all the food out of the bowl. The second is the theory of the five is divinity, and states that humans have all the qualities that the god of the Hebrews has. This would mean that all humans are immortal and infinite. Also this means that humans would be all loving, all knowing, and perfect. Man-machine is the third, and states that everything works like a system much like a robot. This means that one is the way he or she is because he was set up that way. This means that the only reason one acts the way he or she does is because that is the way he or she is â€Å"wired†. The fourth, existentialism, which states that one, must find or create his or her existence outside uniformity. One must get away from all the vices, problems, and routines of life, and must find his or her purpose in life. Finally the fifth, which is the cultural theory of human nature, and it states that there is not only one to define human nature. But, rather a mixture of the first four is the correct answer to the theory of human nature. I believe rationality is superior, and the other four fall short, because reason was used to conjure all other theories. Let’s consider a divine human nature. If we all had a divine human nature we would have no need to debate this, because we would be all knowing, and would know what our nature is. Man-machine falls short simply because it states that there is no rationality; however, it was probably thought up by a man who was searching for a reason why people act the way they do. Next, existentialism, where one must get away from everything and find out for him or her self what his or her purpose is. I really don’t mean to make a joke but this seems like Amish rationality. Then we are left with the cultural theory of human nature. This one just seems like someone wanted to end an argument between the other four. Also it just creates a circle, and does not help us determine which theory of human nature is superior; however the final nail in the coffin is the fact that this theory is trying to find a reason why they saw more than one of these in theories in human nature. I believe that rationality and logic are gifts from God, and are given to us to let us know he exists, and to draw us closer to him. For example take painting, how does one know that the painting had a painter? Because, the painting exists you can see, touch, smell, and even taste it even though you can’t see the painter. Likewise one knows a building had builder because it exists. Also, so that we can know that we have sinned against God by breaking His law. One of the Ten Commandments states: â€Å"you shall not bear false witness† or lie. If one were to tell a lie he would be a liar not only in the sight of God but also by the standard of men, and the bible states in revelation twenty-one eight â€Å"†¦every liar will have his place in the lake of fire†. Because, it also states â€Å"the wages of sin is death†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Romans 6:23a), and this means that we have earned hell for what we have done. Now, rationally who wishes to spend eternity in a lake of fire? But, thankfully it didn’t stop there, because after we find out what we’ve earned we read about what we haven’t: â€Å"†¦but, the free gift of God is eternal life†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This gift was given to us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for the payment of our sins, and all we must do is put our faith in him, and turn away from our sins in repentance. Although the subtleties of the emotions in Stevenson's novel are deeper than those of Martin's, they may still be found spotting the plot in all of the different characters. Stevenson's primary characters, Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll, and Mr. Utterson, display the strongest emotions, and can be most easily documented and interpreted. Martin, on the other hand, swaps out Mr. Utterson as the primary character and replaces him with Mary Reilly, a housemaid living with Dr. Jekyll. Unlike Stevenson, Martin provides a very grand emotional display. Mary is plagued by several distinct emotions, and the thoughts and feelings of Dr. Jekyll are brought to light far more vividly than in Stevenson's text. By utilizing a deep connection to emotion in her novel, Mary Reilly, Valerie Martin nearly transforms the genre of the original Dr. Je kyll and Mr. Hyde into a psychological thriller. Mary Reilly's emotions play the strongest role in Martin's novel. Since the Mary Reilly character does not appear in the original novel, it is difficult to compare her emotional characteristics to those found in Stevenson's novel; her point of view, however, can be loosly juxtaposed to the overall style of the narrators involved in Stevenson's novel.
